Parents have been urged to take a more proactive role in protecting their children from harmful influences that often lead to teenage pregnancies.

The call was made during a community outreach by Rotary District 9214 at Wamukisa Youth Center in Kitala, Wakiso District, where Rotarians donated maternal equipment and household items under the “Start with Her” project.

District Governor Christine Kyeyune Kawooya emphasized the importance of parental guidance.

“Parents must take responsibility in guiding and protecting their children from risky environments that expose them to early pregnancies,” she said.

She noted that gaps in supervision and mentorship continue to leave many young girls vulnerable.

“We must work together as communities to ensure children are supported and safeguarded,” she added.

The team donated essential items including blankets and mattresses to improve the welfare of teen mothers at the center.

According to Esther Lugolobi, the facility admits more than 75 girls annually and currently houses 28 teenage mothers and seven babies.

“We provide shelter, counselling, and skills training to help these girls rebuild their lives,” she said.

However, she highlighted ongoing challenges, noting that access to medical care and addressing trauma from abuse remain major hurdles.

The “Start with Her” project focuses on holistic support, including healthcare, mental well-being, and long-term empowerment for teenage mothers.
